Sectors
The chains we know well enough to be held to.
We work where we have field presence and trading history. Where we do not, we say so and bring in a partner who does. A firm that claims every commodity in every country is telling you something about its marketing, not its capability.
Dairy
Smallholder and commercial dairy: milk production economics, cooling and bulking, cooperative strengthening, feed and fodder systems, and the route from farm gate to processor. A priority chain across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, and a focus of several active regional programmes.
Livestock and pastoral systems
Beef, small ruminants and pastoral value chains, including commercialisation, animal health service delivery, rangeland management and market access from arid and semi arid counties.
Poultry
Layer and broiler systems at smallholder and medium commercial scale: feed cost structures, day old chick supply, biosecurity, and aggregation into urban markets.
Cereals, pulses and oilseeds
Maize, sorghum, rice, beans and other pulses, and oilseeds: input access, post harvest loss reduction, aggregation, storage, quality and aflatoxin management, and structured trade.
Horticulture
Fruit and vegetables for domestic and export markets, including African leafy vegetables, avocado and potato: cold chain, standards and certification, and export compliance.
Aquaculture and fisheries
Pond and cage aquaculture: hatchery and fingerling supply, feed economics, farmer business models, and the route to market. An area of significant active public investment across the region.
Apiculture
Honey and hive products as a low input, high margin enterprise for smallholders, including aggregation, quality and value addition.
Agroforestry and natural resources
Tree based enterprises, landscape restoration and climate adaptation work where agriculture meets natural resource management. Increasingly where climate finance flows.
Cross cutting themes
What runs through every chain we touch
Funders no longer buy a value chain study on its own. They buy it with these dimensions built in from the start, because that is how the programmes themselves are scored.
Climate adaptation
Adaptation and resilience are now the largest single share of agricultural programme finance in the region. We build vulnerability assessment and adaptation logic into design rather than bolting it on.
Gender and youth
Gender transformative and youth sensitive design, assessment and targeting, treated as a delivery question rather than a reporting one.
Agri finance and inclusion
How credit, guarantees, insurance and savings actually reach a smallholder, and what makes a lender comfortable enough to price it.
Nutrition sensitivity
Linking production and market interventions to household diet outcomes, which most funders now require of a majority of their portfolio.
Standards and market access
Food safety, traceability, aflatoxin control and certification for chains that intend to reach formal or export buyers.
Digital and data
Digital advisory, farmer registries and management information systems, assessed on whether farmers use them rather than whether they were installed.
Geography

|---|---|---|
| Kenya | Home market. Registered, staffed and operating since 2013, with field presence in [COUNTIES] counties. | Dairy, poultry, cereals and pulses, horticulture, aquaculture, apiculture, agroforestry |
| Uganda | Served through assignments and partners. [UGANDA STATUS] | Dairy and beef, oilseeds, cereals |
| Tanzania | Served through assignments and partners. [TANZANIA STATUS] | Dairy, horticulture, cereals |
| Rwanda | Served through assignments and partners. [RWANDA STATUS] | Dairy, small livestock, agro export chains |
| Wider Sub Saharan Africa | Selectively, in consortium with regional partners where the assignment requires multi country coverage. | By assignment |
Confirm the status line for each country before publishing. If HAGRO has no delivered assignment in a market yet, say "served in partnership" rather than implying an office.
Working in a chain we have not listed?
Tell us anyway. If we are not the right firm we will say so, and we can usually point you to someone who is.
